New Year, Same Goals?

If your resolutions this year felt oddly familiar, it may be time to revisit the WHY behind them. Why do you want that goal? How specific is it? How will you even know if you've succeeded?

I've found that defining success is one of the elements that separates goals that are a real priority versus goals that people maybe... feel like they SHOULD be setting, but aren't really motivated by or committed to.

Don't let other people's goals define what you should be doing, and try to avoid the shiny, sparkly, short-term solutions -- no 21, 30, 45, or 75-day challenge is going to change you. You don't need to CHANGE, you just need some new habits.

Write down your goals, and then get specific: What would it look like to succeed? How would you know you had gotten there? What would be true? How would you feel? Now once you have that: How can you quantify progress along the way? What would some benchmarks moving toward progress look like? If you want to run a 5K, or lose 20lb, or work through some chronic pain-- how would we know if we were on the right path?

Breaking down and reverse-engineering goals is a strong way to set yourself up for progress, as well as to monitor how you're doing when you're in the muck of getting it done. Take the time here and get specific - you won't regret it.
